Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin reduces wrinkles by temporarily preventing nerve impulses from contracting treated muscles. The skin above the muscle is flatter and less wrinkled if it is not being squeezed together by the muscle. These injections can be used for lines on the forehead, eyebrows, mouth and lips. Botulinum toxin injections can also be used to raise the eyebrows. Normal facial expressions are not affected by the injections. The effects of the injections last for about 3-4 months.

The injections are quick and simple to perform with a minimum of discomfort. The effect of the injections takes 2-3 days to start working with the maximum effect occurring at about 7 days from the injection. In most cases the injections last for 3-4 months and can be repeated on a regular basis if required.

Botulinum toxin injections can also be combined with other treatments such as fillers, but they are not given at the same time. Injections can also increase the results from blepharoplasty and brow lift surgery.

Is Botulinum toxin safe?

Botulinum toxin injections have been used as a cosmetic treatment for over 15 years and have a good safety record. Mr McLean first used Botulinum toxin in the treatment of blepharospasm over 20 years ago and as a cosmetic treatment over the last 15 years. Complications in the hands of an experienced Oculoplastic surgeon are rare. Some bruising may occur following the injection and for this reason it is important to mention any treatments that may make the blood thinner, such as aspirin, Nurofen, ibuprofen, warfarin and vitamins and supplements such as vitamin E and ginkgo biloba.

If the injections are placed too deeply underneath the skin it is possible to have temporary side effects such as drooping of the upper eyelid and double vision. The side effects wear off completely, but it is best to avoid them in the first place. This is why it is important to have injections from an experienced practitioner.
